Domaine Saint Andrieu | The Rebirth of a Provence Estate

From the moment the property was first purchased by Jean-Paul and Nancy Bignon, Domaine Saint Andrieu has embarked on an exciting journey toward the renewal and revitalisation of its vineyard and cellar. Today the estate produces a line of rose, white and red wines, which effortlessly express the diversity of the Provençal terroir.

The Estate’s Metamorphosis

What is doubtless the most important chapter in the life of Domaine Saint Andrieu began in 2003, when Jean Paul and Nancy Bignon purchased the property. Owners of Chateau Talbot, a Grand Cru classified winery in the Saint-Julien appellation of the Medoc, these two saw enormous potential in the vineyards. The estate boasts a privileged location at an altitude of 380 meters in the Provençal hinterland, near the village of Correns. At this altitude, the 26 hectares of vines enjoy a Mediterranean microclimate but with strong continental influences. The plots are scattered on terraces of clay and limestone soils. Determined to revitalise the vineyards and restore the former splendour of the estate, Jean Paul and Nancy Bignon embarked on an ambitious renovation and restructuring program. They also put special emphasis on methods of sustainable viticulture and processes that respect the natural environment of the vine along with the plant itself.

An Ecologically Friendly Approach

Domaine Saint Andreu places great importance on respecting nature through an environmentally and ecologically friendly approach to viticulture. Each vine is treated with respect, as is the natural environment surrounding it. The soil is a vibrant ecosystem, home to billions of bacteria, fungi, protozoa, insects and worms, along with the complex mix minerals and nutrients needed by the vine to survive. By treating the soil as a living, breathing biological organism winemakers ensure that this medium for growth contains the right ratio of “ingredients.” This, in turn, results in healthier vines, which produce higher quality grapes. Environmentally friendly viticulture removes all obstacles, allowing the grapes to best express the nature of the terroir. The respect for nature is also maintained in the vinification process in the estate’s cellar.

A Line of Wines from a Diverse Terroir

The wines of Domaine Saint Andrieu belong to one of two appellations within the wine-growing region of Provence: Cotes de Provence and Coteaux Varois en Provence. Although the estate is perhaps best known for its rose wines – a blend of Grenache, Cinsault, Syrah and Rolle – it also produces single-varietal Rolle white wines. These whites and roses are characterised by a pure expression of fruit on the nose, followed by a well-rounded and very lively appearance on the palate. They tend to be very nicely balanced, yet wonderfully refreshing. Domaine Saint Andrieu also produces red wines from a blend of Syrah with Mourvedre or Cabernet Sauvignon. These wines reveal great elegance, with a complex bouquet of spices, violets and black fruits.

In addition to wine, the estate also produces a premium olive oil from the estate’s olive grove.
