Cloudy Bay | The Pearl of New Zealand

Cloudy Bay was one of the first wineries to be established in the Marlborough area of New Zealand. Founded 30 years ago by David Hohnen – also founder of Cape Mentelle in Australia – the estate now covers nearly 310 hectares. In 2014 the estate celebrated its 30th vintage. The property gets its name from its ideal geographical location between the Pacific Ocean and the Richmond Range, an area known for the prevalence of clouds.

Pioneering New Zealand Wine

Cloudy Bay winery was founded in 1985 by David Hohnen, also the founder of Margaret River winery and Cape Mentelle Vineyards. The estate’s first commercial vintage was made in 1985 from purchased grapes. The company later planted its own vineyards from which to produce wines. Their Sauvignon Blanc was one of the first wine from New Zealand to be so widely exported.

In 2003 the estate was purchased by the champagne house Veuve Clicquot of LVMH (Louis Vuitton Möet Hennessy) and by 2009 increased its production to over 100,000 cases of the Sauvignon blanc.

A Blessed Terroir

The vineyards of Cloudy Bay are located in the Wairau Valley of Marlborough, at the northern edge of New Zealand’s South Island. The vines enjoy a sunny and dry climate with the longest hours of sunshine of any place in the country. The sunshine is softened by a characteristic cloud cover. These clouds, which the estate itself is named after, offer ideal conditions for the cultivation of Sauvignon Blanc, the varietal upon which the winery has built its global reputation. Their Sauvignon Blanc is known throughout the world for its freshness, finesse, refinement and fruity character. On the diverse terroirs included in the property, the estate also produces Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and a slightly effervescent wine called “Pelorus.”

New Zealand’s most emblematic grape, the Sauvignon Blanc, is produced at Cloudy Bay from grapes coming from 9 different plots. In order to perfect the character of the wine, the grape harvests are carried out by hand in the cool temperatures of the evening. The result is a wine whose remarkable aromatic qualities and finesse appreciated by connoisseurs and amateurs alike.

Commitment to the Environment

Cloudy Bay was also one of the founding members of the New Zealand Integrated Winegrape Production scheme, which was created in order to help develop a sustainable vineyard management programme for the wineries of New Zealand. The initiative is now monitored by Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand. The amount of careful attention to detail th estate pays its wines is reflected in the consideration for the impact of wine production on the environment. Sustainable development plays a key role in how the estate is run. The winery is passionately committed to implementing eco-friendly environmental practices both into the management their business and in the nurturing of their vineyards.

Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc 2015

Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc 2015

Marking the 30th anniversary of Cloudy Bay, the 2015 Sauvignon blanc remains true to the pedigree and overall provenance of Cloudy Bay wines, as claimed by Tim Heath, Senior Winemaker. This dry white wine is bright with very focused citrus aromatics of grapefruit and kaffir lime, along with subtle tropical notes. On the palate, the Sauvignon Blanc 2015  is silky and concentrated, revealing ripe, juicy stone fruits and lemongrass, along with a subtle minerality. Its classy acidic structure continues through a mouth-watering and persistent finish. This is a Sauvignon Blanc with great ageing potential.

Cloudy Bay Chardonnay 2014

A perfect spring was followed by mild and sunny climatic conditions, resulting in ripe and precise flavours inside an elegant package. Already impressive at a young age, the Cloudy Bay Chardonnay 2014 is clearly one to watch. A complex nose offers aromas of white peach, spring flowers and a very well integrated smoky quality. The palate is rich in texture with plenty of juicy stone fruit and citrus, like lemon. Rich, yet superbly balanced with plenty of fresh acidity providing its characteristic shape and focus. A truly elegant wine with a long and vibrant finish.
